UN urges protection for medical workers
Governments are responsible for providing healthcare services and extending protection to dedicated medical workers fighting on behalf of delivering care to their fellow citizens in highly dangerous and conflict-prone areas of the world. During a recent interview, Kate Gilmore, the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, outlined the challenges associated with extending the basic human right of health to all people. The persistent threat of leaving behind the world’s most vulnerable population is prevalent in areas exposed to conflict where health facilities and health related infrastructure is a constant target for increased attacks. In non-conflict areas, prejudice and discrimination around pandemics such as leprosy and HIV/AIDS impede people’s access to treatment and vaccines to overcome these diseases.
